Art & Sculpture Park

Art is an integral part of Hurdalsjøen Hotell & Spa. Around the hotel, throughout the sculpture park and in the shared indoor spaces, you will find a varied collection of sculptures, reliefs and other works by Norwegian artists.
The collection has grown over many years, and art appears in unexpected places – among the trees, by the water, along the paths and inside the hotel. The collection includes works by artists such as Nico Widerberg, Sverre Bjertnæs, Ole Martin Skaug, Elena Engelsen, Andrea Scholze and Jørleif Uthaug.

«Bølgen» – Nico Widerberg

«Bølgen» by Nico Widerberg stands beside Lake Hurdalsjøen and was installed here to mark the hotel’s 50th anniversary in 2019. Widerberg is known for his simplified human figures and works in materials including stone, bronze and glass. The human form and the character of the materials are central to his art. Here, the elongated figure meets the surrounding landscape and views across Lake Hurdalsjøen.

«Krans» – Nico Widerberg

Like «Bølgen», Nico Widerberg’s «Krans» became part of the hotel’s sculpture park in connection with its 50th anniversary in 2019. The sculpture stands in a birch grove near the hotel and is carved from granite, with a wreath of copper. The work carries several of Widerberg’s characteristic elements, combining a stylised human figure with the natural expression of stone.

«Pianisten har gått hjem» – Pål Gjerstad

On the lawn on the south side of the hotel stands «Pianisten har gått hjem» by Pål Gjerstad, former director of Hurdalsjøen Hotell & Spa. Gjerstad has long been interested in art and has contributed to the sculpture park himself. An old piano has been given an unexpected new life: encased in sprayed concrete, it now stands as a sculpture – while the pianist, as the title suggests, has gone home.

«Det kollektive mennesket» – Sverre Bjertnæs

«Det kollektive mennesket» by Sverre Bjertnæs became part of the hotel’s sculpture park in September 2019. It stands at the front of the hotel, to the right of the main entrance. Bjertnæs is a painter, printmaker and a central figure in Norwegian contemporary art. His work spans portraits, figure studies and references to art history, and in recent years he has explored the creative process through collaborations with other artists and cultural figures.

«Swinger» – Ole Martin Skaug

High in a birch tree beside Lake Hurdalsjøen sits «Swinger» by Ole Martin Skaug. The sculpture overlooks the two lakeside saunas on the south-eastern shore. Skaug works primarily with ceramics and is known for grotesque, absurd and humorous creations. His figures often comment on human vanity, with an expression that makes them difficult to pass without stopping for a closer look.

«Damvokteren» – Ole Martin Skaug

By the dam north of the hotel, «Damvokteren» by Ole Martin Skaug keeps watch. Skaug originally trained as a photographer, but ceramics have become his primary form of artistic expression, particularly stoneware clay. In his studio, it takes shape as detailed, grotesque and absurd figures, often with teeth, wrinkles and other human features. «Damvokteren» is one of several works by Skaug found around the hotel.

«Flygende Hunder» – Ole Martin Skaug

«Flygende Hunder» by Ole Martin Skaug greets visitors by the entrance to the hotel’s car park. Skaug is known for his grotesque, absurd and humorous creations, often shaped with a remarkable level of detail that gives each figure a character of its own. «Flygende Hunder» is one of several works by the artist found around the hotel – and a rather unexpected welcome on arrival.

«Fragment In Motion» – Henrik Gjerstad

«Fragment In Motion» by Henrik Gjerstad stands near the dam by Hurdalsjøen Hotell & Spa. Gjerstad studied at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and the Rhode Island School of Design. His work combines bold colours, text and lyrical elements in a sensory, expressionistic visual language with both urban and contemporary influences.

«Kameleonen» – Elena Engelsen

«Kameleonen» is one of two sculptures by Elena Engelsen at Hurdalsjøen Hotell & Spa. Engelsen is particularly known for her animal sculptures, in which recognisable creatures take on subtly distorted forms and an expression that reaches beyond a purely naturalistic representation. She studied at the Norwegian National College of Art and Design in Oslo and at a stone-carving workshop in Amsterdam.

«Kraniet» – Elena Engelsen

«Kraniet» is the second work by sculptor Elena Engelsen in the hotel’s art collection. Engelsen often creates sculptures inspired by animals and nature, exploring forms that invite the viewer to see the subject from different perspectives. Her works can be found in several public collections, and in 2021 she received the Anders Jahre Cultural Prize.

«Tusenbeinet» – Andrea Scholze

«Tusenbeinet» by Andrea Scholze is part of the art collection at Hurdalsjøen Hotell & Spa. Scholze works primarily with ceramics, creating roughly modelled, expressive creatures that often inhabit the space between animal and human. Her art brings together biology, human states of mind and questions about the relationship between modern life and nature.

«Norsk Rottepinscher» – Ole Martin Skaug

«Norsk Rottepinscher» is one of Ole Martin Skaug’s distinctive creations found around the hotel. Skaug is known for grotesque, absurd and highly detailed sculptures, often accompanied by a generous dose of humour. This particular creature has even been given its own cage. The hotel offers a simple explanation: it is there for the safety of the guests.
